Fallout 4 detractors can breathe easy.Visit the Aquarium of the Americas to view sea life and even feed stingrays. Fans might notice that while NPCs are fully voiced, the character chooses their own dialogue from a non-voiced list of options, just like they used to. It covers all the bases you might expect: players can choose to support different vampire clans as they move through the story, making friends and enemies as they go along: et. But the team assures me that it wouldn't consider this a genuine foll0w-up to the original without a deep degree of player choice and breadth of story. The RPG elements aren't as easy to see in a demo, particularly one that focuses on early parts of the game.

Humans will have different types of blood-based on what emotions they're feeling, and that comes with corresponding benefits: there was quite a lot to take in in my 30-minute demo, but that feels in line with both the property and Paradox, a publisher known for punishingly complex PC games. You'll choose from three vampire disciples, each with their own powers, and you'll navigate the word differently whether you choose to focus on bats, mist or telekinesis. There's a Dishonored feel to what I saw so far, albeit one with more agile melee combat and less emphasis on stealth. You'll need them because vampire opponents are not nearly so witless.

You are agile, fast and brutally effective compared to witless human opponents, and you'll acquire a range of superpowers as the game goes on. The developers didn't want to spend too much time focusing on things like weapons or body armor: the thrust here is that you're a vampire, and the feelings that drive combat and exploration should derive from that. It's 2019, and so Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 has a much smoother, action-oriented feel than its predecessor. We enter into that world unformed, both in terms of the powers that will define our combat and exploration and in terms of where we'll end up standing in the complex world of vampire society. Noir is the order of the day, casting the character as a brand-new vampire turned in a "mass embrace"-a public attack that at the beginning of the game has turned roiled the politics of the vampire world.

The feeling of the original comes over intact: a noir-infused vision of the night, with light trickling through the shades of dusty old apartments and streetlamps filtering through foggy streets. It's also a city that's not exactly heavy on sunshine-this is not a terrible setting for a vampire game. It moves the action from Los Angeles to Seattle, a city that-I just learned- has a giant number of underground passageways and old basements that come from when large swaths of the city were destroyed in a fire and new buildings and streets built on top. Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 is a sequel to the original, a cult classic that only sold about 72,000 copies at launch.
